Mute swear words in a video, automatically
No bleep, just a clean drop-out timed to each word. Everything else is untouched, and you can switch to a bleep later.
When a mute beats a bleep
A bleep is a sound effect. It tells the audience a word was there, it carries a bit of comedy, and in a quiet interview it is the loudest thing in the room. A mute does the opposite: the word simply is not there. Which one you want depends on what the video is for. Comedy, streams and reaction content usually want the bleep. Corporate video, education, documentary, testimonials, ads and anything with a music bed usually want the mute, because the goal is for nobody to notice.
The cost of a mute is that the gap has to be exact. Too early and it clips the word before; too late and the start of the swear leaks through; too long and the sentence has a hole in it. Redactify times each mute from a word-level transcript, so it starts and ends with the word itself, and merges swears that fall close together into one span rather than a stutter of short gaps. The mute is a true drop to silence for that span, applied to the mixed track, so a music bed under the word drops for that fraction of a second too; on most beds that is less noticeable than a tone would be.
On camera, a mute has the same weakness as a bleep: the mouth still says the word. Turn on mouth blur and the lips are covered for exactly the muted span. If you change your mind later, Pro accounts can switch a finished job from mute to bleep, or the other way, and reprocess without uploading again.
Timed to the word
Each mute starts and ends with the word itself, so you never lose half a sentence around it.

03:17okay that was brilliant
07:55chat, I am not doing that again

Blur the mouth too
Silence hides the sound; the mouth still says it. The blur covers the lips for exactly the muted span.

Questions
Last updated
Can I mix mute and bleep in one video?
Each job uses one censor style. On Pro you can reprocess a finished job with the other style; otherwise run it again with a different style for a second version.
Does the file get shorter?
No. Nothing is cut out. Each swear is replaced in place, so the clean file is the same length as the original and still lines up with any video, chapters or timestamps.
Will the background music drop out too?
For the fraction of a second the word lasts, yes. The mute applies to the mixed track. On most music beds that short dip is less noticeable than a tone would be.
Is a mute better than a bleep for YouTube?
YouTube treats censored language more favourably than uncensored, and both a mute and a bleep are censoring. Pick by tone: mute for anything that should feel untouched, bleep when the edit is part of the joke.
Can I mute a word that isn't a swear?
Yes. On Pro, add it to a custom word list and it is caught like any other.
Is Redactify free?
