Explicit, clean, or both

Podcast directories ask you to say whether an episode is explicit. Apple's podcast requirements require an explicit tag where it applies, and the flag follows the episode into every app that reads your feed. It is honest and it is fine; plenty of big shows carry it. What the flag also does is let listeners, parents and some devices filter explicit episodes out, and it keeps the episode off a lot of radio, syndication and brand-friendly playlists.

The usual answer is two versions: the episode as recorded with the explicit flag, and a clean cut for the people and places that need one. Doing that by hand means a second edit of the whole episode every week. With a word-level transcript it is a render: upload the mixed episode, pick the categories that count as explicit for your show, and download a clean file that is the same length to the sample, so chapter markers, show-notes timestamps and any video edit still line up.

Silence tends to suit conversation better than a tone; a bleep is louder and reads as comedy. Multi-host shows and remote guests are separated automatically, so a guest's language is caught the same as yours. If the podcast is also a video, the same job can blur each speaker's mouth on the video edition. Pro and Premium can export the transcript as a subtitle file with the swears masked, which is a quick way to make clean show notes.

Questions

Last updated

Can I keep some words?

Yes. Untick any detection before downloading, or (on Pro) add a whitelist so words you don't count as swearing are never caught.

Does the file get shorter?

No. Nothing is cut out. Each swear is replaced in place, so the clean file is the same length as the original and still lines up with any video, chapters or timestamps.

Do I get a transcript?

On Pro and Premium you can download subtitles as .SRT or .VTT, with swears shown raw, partly censored or fully redacted.

Does it work over a music bed or intro?

It is built for speech. Spoken words over music are usually fine; sung lyrics over loud music are harder to transcribe, so results there vary.

What about guests recorded remotely?

Remote and local voices are treated the same. If you have separate tracks, mix the episode first and upload the mix; the clean file comes back at the same length, ready to publish.

Which file types work?

Video: MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM and MKV. Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and AAC.

How long can my file be?

Up to 8 hours per file on every plan, so full stream VODs and long podcast episodes are fine. Credits are charged by the minute.

Is Redactify free?

You can try it free: new accounts get 30 credits, no card needed. Audio costs 1 credit a minute and video with mouth blur costs 2. Pro is $5/month for 75 credits, Premium $20/month for 350, or top up at $0.10 a credit.
